Introduction:
The Bible is a practical book and applies to everyday life. In this
letter the Apostle begins with the faith…the doctrine of salvation. He
then moves on to show how the cross…our salvation in Jesus Christ
affects and applies to everyday life (relating to our country &
government; also in the work-place). But, there is another place where we
are to live the Christian life, and that is in the home! (Illus: Saved
women with lost husbands…there is a difference between being in this
state and deliberately choosing to marry a lost man…expound). The Bible
here gives instruction to women who desire to be God pleasing women. I
encourage every woman here today, whether or no you are a mother to make a
commitment to be a God pleasing woman! Notice three observations in this
passage here concerning godly women.
I. THE INFLUENCE
OF A GODLY WOMAN (VV.1-2)
If she is to be a godly influence she has to be:
A.
A Compassionate
Wife (1a) (Loving Wife)
“Subjection” = a military term meaning to line up under; to place
one’s self under the authority of another; in other words…to occupy
your place of influence. What does that mean?
- Doesn’t mean surrendering your
identity or self-worth (expound). But, lovingly follow the husband’s
lead in life.
- Doesn’t mean following the husband
with unquestioning obedience (the only one you are to follow with
unquestioning obedience is the Lord Jesus Christ).
- Doesn’t mean you are a second class
citizen (v.7).
Submitting
is voluntary cooperation, voluntary partnership. It is putting God first
and lining up with His Word.
B.
A Consistent
Witness (1b-2) (Living Witness)
“Conversation” = behavior (manner of life). “Chaste” = clean, innocent,
modest, pure. “Fear”
= respect for her husband because of the respect she has for God and His
Word.
- Model the gospel with your life.
- I believe God stops every harp in
heaven to hear the prayer of a godly mother!
II. THE APPEARANCE
OF A GODLY WOMAN (VV.3-4)
The Bible is saying that you are to not to cloth or conduct yourself in a
manner that will draw attention away from the Lord Jesus Christ.
A.
The Exterior (v.3)
The Lord
wants your appearance to say to people:
- I’m here to help you not to seduce
you.
- I’m here to point you to Christ not
to my physical body.
- The way you cloth and conduct yourself
should not send out a worldly signal nor hid the Jesus that is in you!
B.
The Interior (v.4)
The godly
woman doesn’t focus her attention only on the outside…she focuses her
attention on developing the inside!
- “Meek”
= gentle
- “Quiet”
= that doesn’t mean she never says anything; it means calm and
tranquil.
The godly
woman (mother) has character. Who was gentle and calm in spirit…Jesus! God is saying, “I want you to be like Jesus on the inside
and I don’t want you to have anything on the outside that mares or is
not compatible with the Jesus on the inside”
III. THE REVERENCE
OF A GODLY WOMAN (VV.5-6)
We are not talking about the casual, part-time, in and out, uncommitted
woman, but the serious, sold-out, surrender, separated woman of God.
- Their hope was in God not things (v.5a)
- They dress themselves with a gentle and
calm spirit trusting in God no matter what (v.5b)
- “lord”
= a tem of respect. It was not easy to be married to Abraham
(expound).
Conclusion:
Commit yourself to be a godly woman. One who will pray for their
husbands and others to be saved. One who will become role a model to other
women to live a life of godliness.
