CHOICES AND CONSEQUENCES
  2 Thessalonians 1:5-10

Introduction:   One of the hallmarks of the consumer culture that we live in is the number of choices that we have. Previous generations did have all the choices we have (expound). With the increase of our choices the significance of those choices have severely decreased. There is another hallmark of our culture. Not only are there a number of choices that are not really significant, but also the consequences of the choices we make, for the most part, people won’t take responsibility for. Here in our text there is one choice that has eternal consequences and one choice that you will have to take responsibility for. There is no passing the buck. The choice here is to receive or reject the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. Three things that will happen when Jesus returns:

I.          HE IS GOING TO AVENGE HIS PEOPLE  (V.5)

Every now and then we want to see people get what’s coming to them (Ills. Woman selling classic Mustang for $50.00)

            A.        God Rewards The Loyal

  • Believers do suffer – Counted worthy of the Kingdom.
  • The believer’s perseverance in suffering is a manifest token (evidence) of the righteous Judgment of God that you may be counted wortour loyalty to God even under adverse circumstances is evidence that the Holy Spirit of God makes you worthy. How else can you exh strength?

            B.        God Empowers The Loyal

  • I can hang in there because God is righteous. “Righteous judgment” = the quality of being right. I know God is just and in His time He will right all the wrongs. God has watched us go through the adversity and the pain. It would have been easer to give up and turn back, but you stayed faithful and one of these days God is going to avenge that which is unjust but He is going to reward and empower the loyal!

II.        HE IS GOING TO EXECUTE HIS PUNISHMENT  (VV.6-8)

            A.        He Is Going To Re-pay Injustice  (v.6)

            B.        He Is Going To Give Rest To Believers  (v.7a)

            C.        He Is Going To Bring His Vengeance To Unbelievers  (vv.7a-8)

He’s Coming Back Personally – “revealed” = un-vHe’s Coming Back Dramatically – “with His mighty Angles” (v.8) “In flaming Fire” = Holiness. This is not petty revenge this is making what is

            D.        He Is Going To Punish Eternally  (v.9)

III.       HE IS GOING TO REVEAL HIS GLORY  (V.10)

This is why it is so important that we make the right choice and understand the consequences. Jesus is coming back to reveal His Glory!

            A.        Revealed In Us

            B.        Revealed Before Us

Amazed that God has done all this just for us! Thank God for Grace, Mercy, for not giving up on me, for your patience, and your Salvation. Brother, it IS (was) worth it ALL!

Conclusion:     Right now it’s time to choose. Right now you have to make a choice. What will it be, Heaven or Hell?
