THE
PROVISION OF A BETTER SACRIFICE Introduction:
When Jesus died upon the cross, the Bible records that He spoke
three significant words, It is finished. They tell us that through
the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, God has removed everything about us that He
could not stand in His Holy presence. That is why the writer of Hebrews
can say that Believers are perfected forever. Our position before
God cannot be improved upon. If we are going to grow in grace and become
fruitful in our Christian walk, our faith must be anchored in the finished
work of our position in Christ. Our position is perfect, eternally
established because of our dependence upon the work Christ has done. Our condition,
what we observe in our daily walk, may vary as we grow and mature, but our
position remains constant – perfected forever. From the
moment of our new birth, this fact has been true. This is why God can
write His law upon our hearts and erase the record of our failures. This
is why we have boldness to enter the holiest. Through the offering of
Jesus Christ once for all, we have been perfected forever. I. THE PREEMINENCE
OF CHRIST’S SACRIFICE (vv.11-14) A.
The Comparison
(vv.11-13) (a futile work versus a finished work) Under
the Law, one day after another, one priest after another offered one
sacrifice after another, always standing because their work never removed
a single sin. In contrast, Christ alone offered one sacrifice for all sins
for all time. Then, because His work was complete, He sat down. B.
The Conclusion
(v.14) ·
We can add nothing to the work of Christ for our salvation.
We accept it by faith. ·
We can add nothing to the work of Christ for our
sanctification. We appropriate it by faith. It is through His one
offering that we are perfected forever. What could be plainer
that that? II. THE PERMANENCE
OF CHRIST’S SACRIFICE (vv.15-18) A.
It Is Final Because Righteousness Is Restored.
Through
the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, God’s Law is written in our hearts.
Compare with Romans 8:3-4 B.
It Is Final Because Sin Is Removed.
God
could not forget our sins (and no longer hold us accountable) if they were
not genuinely, judicially removed from the sinners record. But such is
God’s grace that He has completely cleansed us from sin. He requires no
sacrifice, no penance, and no works for us to be accepted by Him. Conclusion:
We can add nothing to the work of Christ for our salvation. We
accept it by faith. We can add nothing to the work of Christ for our
sanctification. We appropriate it by faith. It is through His one
offering that we are perfected forever. What could be plainer
that that? |
