SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT
Luke 1:67-79

Introduction:    Many People have many views about Jesus Christ and how to get to heaven. Recorded here for us is a hymn of praise (expound others). Zacharias begins to sing; Elizabeth sang and Mary sang…well, they have something to sing about because their heart is griped by this truth – man no longer has to wonder how do I get to heaven. Now God has come and in Jesus Christ He has made it crystal clear that there is one way to heaven. There are four pictures in this song that describe what the coming of Christ really means.

I.          THE RELEASING OF A PRISONER (V.68-70)

Redeemed” = to release a prisoner or liberate a slave by paying the required price.

·       Jesus came to break the bondage that sin puts on us.

·       Sin binds you – sin confines you – sin captivates you and holds you hostage.

·       You can’t do right because you are controlled by the power of indwelling sin.

You may have come here this morning unsaved and bound up in sin, but if you’ll trust Jesus as you Savior He’ll redeem you – He’ll set you free and put a new song in your heart!

II.         THE DEFEATING OF AN ENEMY (V.71-75)

We can be delivered (saved)! Who are our enemies? The enemies of the soul – sin, death, hell, and the grave. In His death, burial, and resurrection, Jesus defeated all our enemies. ( Col 2:15) "And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it."

·       We can now serve Him without fear (v. 74)

·       We can now serve Him in holiness & righteousness (v.75)

III.       THE PAYING OF A DEBIT (VV.76-77)

Remission” = forgiveness (to dismiss a debit)

·       How do you get that forgiveness? This is where many people miss it.

·       Received only by grace and faith – there is not one thing I can do to earn it.

·       The only way to receive grace is to receive it as a gift from God and say – nothing in my hand I bring…only to thy cross I cling!

IV.       THE BEGINNING OF A NEW DAY (VV.78-79)

Dayspring” = sunrise (the beginning of a new day)

·       Man without Christ is groping in darkness.

·       And then the hand of Jesus touched me…and there was a “new day” – a new start.

·       Today can be a new day for you. You can have a new start in Jesus.

That’s why Zacharias is singing. He has something to sing about.

Conclusion:     (Illus: Teddy Roosevelt asking Clara Barton (Red Cross) to buy food for his Rough-Riders…was told it was not possible…it wasn’t for sale, but he could have all he needed just for the asking). How can you have this song in your heart today? Simply ask!
