CHRIST-LIKE COMPASSION
Luke 10:30-37

Introduction:      Christianity is different from all other world religious systems. The Bible teaches that Christianity is not isolated just to me - it touches me but then it moves out! Christianity is not something I hold on to – it moves me to see the world as Jesus sees it and motivates me to reach out in this world as Jesus did! What is the hallmark of Christianity that separates us from the religious mob out there? I believe it is true heart compassion! That was the hallmark of Jesus. (Illus: Jesus had compassion on all – those who hated him & who loved Him and it moved Him to endure the suffering and shame of Calvary for you and me because He truly had compassion on this lost world). The hallmark of a Christian is that I share in the compassion of Jesus.

I.          A RIGHTEOUS IMPULSE
Only the truly saved can express compassion in the way the Lord wants you to. Religion does not produce compassion. (Vv.25-28 - Deut.6:3; Deut.6:11)

            A.        Result Of Conversion

            B.         Return God’s Love

            C.         React To Others

II.         A RARE IMPULSE

            A.        Some Practice Exploitation

            B.         Some Practice Apathy

·         The Priest – placed his religious work before the welfare of the man. “Passed by on the other side” = he rushed away.

·         The Levite – placed his safety before compassion. He was touched with enough feeling to look, but shrank away from helping him.

III.       A REVOLUTIONARY IMPULSE

            A.        Heart Helpfulness

He saw a man in need – not a Jew.

            B.         Sacrificed Self

He gave of his time and energy – (1) He went to him- reached out personally. (2) He bound his wounds – eased his pain. (3) He poured oil and wine into his wounds – gave of his own goods. (4) He set him on his own beast – sacrificed his own comfort. (5) He provided a room for him – basic necessities. (6) He took care of him – looked after him personally.

            C.         Continual Care

“Two pence” = about 30 days board. He saw a desperate need and did what he could to meet it.

Conclusion:       Jesus’ commission was forceful. The lawyer now knew who his neighbor was – anyone in need of mercy. However, more than just confession was needed. Love was needed. The lawyer and all of us need to demonstrate love (compassion) as we go about our daily lives. Having been reminded that the hallmark of the Christian is to share in the compassion of Jesus may we heed His Word, “Go, and do thou likewise”
