WALKING
THE Introduction:
One of the great problems for the born again Christian is living a
life that is victorious over sin. Romans chapter 6 introduces us to a new
way of living which is the I. THE WAY OF CRUCIFIXION (VV.1-7) A. The Illustration Of This Experience (vv.1-5) ·
Spirit Baptism - (1 Cor 12:13) "For
by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we
be Jews or Gentiles, whether we
be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one
Spirit." ·
The Holy Spirit unites the
believer in a very personal and practical way with the death of Jesus
(Illus: when He died I died…). B. The Implications of This Experience (vv.6-7) “Old man” = old nature. The true believer is dead to sin! “Destroyed” = to be (render) entirely idle; to make void.
The old man rules only if you allow him to (v.7) Do not allow a dead man to rule your life. (Illus: I’m dead to that…) II. THE WAY OF RESURRECTION (VV.8-9) If when He died I died, then when He came out of that tomb – I came out of that tomb! (Illus: resurrection power living in me)
A.
Gives Life (v.8) It’s His life is my life
B.
Gives It’s His strength, not my strength – His power not my power. (Illus: Up from the grave He arose…and when I got saved I was united to that experience. III. THE WAY OF APPROPRIATION (VV.10-13) How can I make this experience mine? 4 words:
A.
The Word Know (vv.3, 6, 9) There are some things that you have to know. If you don’t know that you are alive in Christ – you can’t walk in that resurrection power! If you don’t know who you are in Christ you can’t walk in it.
B.
The Word Reckon (v.11) “Reckon” = to take into account (compute). I do not have to be controlled by the “old man” – God has unplugged him. Now, I’m going to act and life like that! I just believe it’s so.
C.
The Word Reign (v.12) “Reign” = to exercise kingly power. Who’s going to reign in your life? D. The Word Yield (v.13) “Yield” to put at ones disposal. “Members” = a tool or a weapon. Your body and your life is a tool or a weapon in the hands of satan or in the hands of God. It depends on who you yield your life to. This is a daily choice you make. (Illus: a laser can do great good or great harm – it all depends on who is used it. Your life can be a great blessing or a great curse – it all depends on who controls it). Conclusion: If we learn nothing else from the book Romans, let us learn the fact that we are dead to sin, because we were crucified with Jesus! Let us learn that what happened to Him has happened to us. When He died to sin, we died to sin! When He arose in victory, we arose in victory. We are no longer slaves, but we are free! Friend, the devil knows that if you are saved you do not belong to him. However, if you choose to continue to live for him and to do his will, he won't turn you away. He can't have you, but he will sure keep you in spiritual bondage unless you come to grasp the truth that in Jesus you are free at last!
